| More About the Tree Planting Program |
"100 Years Tree Planting" Program From now until Earth Day 2109, when you join our Java Perks Coffee Club, we’ll plant a native, rainforest tree in your name on our company's own organic coffee farm in Central America. We’ll even email you a picture of your tree!
Did we say, 2109? Yes we did. We’re committed to planting a native tree for all club customers for the next 100 years and beyond.
When you sign up for our club, we’ll associate your name with a native, rainforest-highlands tree sapling and plant it after a year on one of our own 100% organic, shade coffee farms. Initially, we'll be planting the trees on "Rancho Quilco," one of our newest organic farms in the very southern state of Chiapas in Mexico. This 150 hectare farm is in an area called "Sinai," where we recently built a school in partnership with Costco in Mexico through our innovative Community Aid program.
The types of trees we’ll be planting are native to the southern Mexico region. They are: Chicharro, Mezcal, Hormiguillo, Albaricoque, Aguacate de Montaña, Cola de Pava, and Tepemixtle. They will be planted in and amongst the current shade coffee trees providing even more shade and more diversity for native species.

Whether you decide to keep or cancel your club membership, your tree stays - growing in a beautiful, 100% organic environment forever!
Shade Coffee Farming & Carbon Sequestration Did you know that shade and organic coffee farming is one of the rare, human industries that can actually restore the earth’s health. How’s that, you may be asking? Mixed agro-forestry (coffee trees planted among fast-growing, highland rainforest trees) can sequester up to 20 tons of carbon/hectare/year. Compare this to a full-sun, ‘mono-culture’ (row after row of a single coffee tree species) coffee plantation that absorbs only around 6 tons per year. (Click to learn more about carbon sequestering and our carbon negative company.)
Shade and organic coffee farms also preserve habitat for migrating and native birds and animals, and can even restore local water supplies. It also happens to makes a great cup of coffee!
So, club customers will be helping us fight global warming by offsetting the carbon emissions created in the coffee production, roasting and transportation process through this "100 Years Tree Planting" program.

Update November 2009
Below is a picture of the native trees in their nursery at our organic coffee farm "Rancho Quilco" in Mexico. They are growing from seed and have been planted at various times, hence the varying levels of progress!
